dGen Annual Report 2021

Welcome to the dGen Annual Report - 2021. This report is a chance to  look back at our work over the past year. In 2020, several trends emerged that will shape society over the next decade and impact the tech revolution spurred by these changes. In this report, we analyse these trends and provide predictions for the coming decade.

In the dGen Annual Report - 2021, we take a look back at the work we have done over the last year as we prepare for the next.

Our programmes and initiatives in 2021 will focus on four impact areas:

  • Inclusion and Access
  • Money and Sovereignty
  • Ownership and Identity
  • Governance and Power

With these areas of focus, we hope to drive forward more inclusive monetary systems and technology. Our goal is to decentralise power back to the hands of individuals.

In this, we will take a multipronged approach, through academic research and a community driven awareness campaign to educate and draw citizens, decision makers, and researchers into conversations about the future of society, enabled by technology for good.

What funding opportunities are available in Europe?

In 2020, we launched our public funding initiative. Over the last year, we worked with institutions and SMEs across Europe to address social issues in tech in Europe.

Our programmes focussed on:

  • Addressing the gender gap in blockchain
  • Developing job opportunities for underrepresented groups
  • Building advocacy opportunities for youth groups.

While the bulk of our efforts centred on public funding opportunities, we are also working to connect SMEs to smarter funding. Public funding provides essential connections between companies, tech experts, and researchers, enabling early projects to develop with greater insights. Increasing the number of projects with access to public funding can help to improve private funding access according to Leonidas Katelaris of Institute For the Future.

We look forward to working on other projects to improve the social impact of technologies in Europe.

What trends in 2020 will shape the next decade?

Our work looked at areas that are already, and will continue to, feel the impacts of emerging technologies. Our aim is to continue to focus on the trends most impacting people today to establish a more decentralised and democratic future through technology.

The areas that emerged in 2020 that will shape the future of our work, not only in 2021, but into the next decade are:

  • Social Impact of Covid-19
  • Politics - Citizen Voices
  • Economic Impacts
  • New Generations.

All of these areas were deeply impacted by coronavirus. We hope that on the back of the tragedies that we faced in 2020 can spur a better digital environment and greater connection, not only between digital and physical realms, but also between the people that make up and drive our society.

What do we predict for the next decade?

The world is changing. The tech revolution of the 2020s is here, and not slowing down for anybody.

The changes that have been brewing below the surface are bubbling up, and over the next decade, we expect to see:

  • Decentralisation of Globalisation
  • Sovereign Money will be Challenged
  • Cryptography Becomes a Priority
  • Digital Identity Arrives
  • A Greener Bitcoin
  • Payments, Payments, Payments.

As we embark into the next generation of digital services, we want to help guide platforms, companies and decentralised projects. We will connect users and engaged communities to push for progressive change and raise awareness about how new technologies can change the structures of power, money, and ownership models of today.
